ADULT: Wingspan 32 -42mm. Typical of the Wainscots this species has narrow buffish brown forewings with strong whitish wing venations. The reniform stigma is reduced to a small black dot and postmedian line replaced by two small black dots which can sometimes be difficult to make out. The hindwings are pure white. CHRYSALIS: Pupa found in deep grass. LARVA: Brownish with a series of white lines down its back and a row of darker lines along each side. Feeds on a variety of grasses. BEHAVIOUR: Attracted to light and comes to flowers. HABITAT: Hedgerows, gardens, parks and coastal. FLIGHT PERIOD: Resident. May to October. STATUS: Resident. Common throughout but absent in north of Scotland. |
